Three faculty positions in Social/Cultural Geographies addressing contemporary crises of sustainability in Asia
The Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore (NUS) seeks to appoint three established or emerging research leaders in the field of Social/Cultural Geography whose work addresses contemporary crises of sustainability in Asia. This could include, but is not limited to, issues of environmental justice, sustainable practices and futures, or the socio-spatial dimensions of climate change. The successful candidates will be expected to play leading and innovative roles in the Department’s Social and Cultural Geographies (SCG) group and to build an ambitious programme of research.
Two positions are at Assistant Professor level on the tenure-track and one at Associate or Full Professor level with tenure.

Researcher in complex network modelling and systemic risk
CICERO invites applications for a temporary position for 2 years, with the possibility for a permanent position, for research on the impacts of climate change on sectors, countries, regions and globally considering cross-sectoral interlinkages and systemic risks. Our new colleague will perform climate and socioeconomic data analysis, write articles and contribute to research applications and external communication.
We seek a researcher with competence in complex network modeling and analysis of systemic risk. Applicants must be interested and have some experience with applying and integrating knowledge from other disciplines in economic analyses. This includes particularly the development of approaches to better represent the economic consequences of climate extremes and decision-making under uncertainty.
Lecturer in geo-environmental hazards at Cardiff University
As part of an on-going programme of investment and development, the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Cardiff University is seeking to appoint a lecturer in Geo-environmental Hazards. You should share our passion for high quality research-led teaching, including field-based learning. You will be able to contribute to a range of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including both natural hazards and other environmental hazards that often arise from human impact on the Earth’s surface and resources. You will also supervise MSc and PhD thesis students.
The successful candidate must develop and sustain an internationally-recognised, externally-funded research programme addressing environmental/geohazards and their impacts. We are seeking candidates who complement our current research programme and who are able to integrate across existing areas of expertise. Current areas of research interest in the school at large include tectonics, geodynamics, magmatism, natural resource exploration, marine science, palaeoclimate, climate/environmental change, hydrology and hydrogeology, high-latitude and montane environments, and environmental/geohazards and their impacts.

PDRA position for two years on multihazards based out of King’s College London
King’s College London is recruiting a two-year postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) to contribute to Tomorrow’s Cities, an interdisciplinary research hub aiming to integrate multihazard disaster risk management into urban policy and practice. The PDRA will be focused on the multihazards integrating theme, working across the four hub cities: Istanbul, Kathmandu, Nairobi and Quito. Working with others in the hub, the PDRA will be expected to:
- contribute to the development and implementation of the multi-hazard integration theme
- contribute to research that characterises the multihazard landscape of the study regions and implications for disaster risk reduction
- support knowledge exchange and communications regarding multihazard approaches (both across the four hub cities and beyond)
- work closely with city teams and others to help embed multi-hazard approaches into the Hub activities
The PDRA will work most directly with Prof Bruce D Malamud (at King’s College London) and Dr Joel Gill (at the British Geological Survey). Flexible hours and part time are possible. This position is for someone who already has right to work in the UK.

Postdoctoral research associate position at the University of Bristol
A research associate position is available in the School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies, University of Bristol. The successful applicant will work on the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Urban Disaster Risk Hub, funded by the UK Research Institute. The project seeks to bring disaster risk management to the centre of global urban policy and practice, strengthening the voice and capacity of the urban poor.

Research associate opportunity at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich
The Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich is one of the largest and most renowned universities in Germany. The Teaching and Research Unit on Human-Environment Relations at the Department of Geography is looking for a research associate with a focus on future risk trends, adaptation and transformation in coastal cities (E14 TV-L, 100%).
The TRANSCEND project (Transformation Decisions for the Adaptation and Sustainability of Cities in the Face of Environmental and Socio-economic Change) is a five-year transdisciplinary research undertaking, focusing on high-risk coastal cities. The project aims to develop transferable tools whose application to high-risk cities will be facilitated through multiplier activities in Asia and beyond.

Assistant Professor — Climate Change Studies

The successful candidate will contribute to research, teaching and academic life in the department and will have expertise in Climate Change Studies.
Candidates should be capable of teaching courses in multiple areas within our curriculum, and of supporting MS and PhD students in research projects that may range from environmental resource management to Geographic Information Science, while maintaining an active research agenda related to understanding climate change. Group leader: climate change — Public Health England

The BGS is a partner organisation within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). A fixed term vacancy has arisen for an enthusiastic geohazard and vulnerability specialist to be based at our headquarters in Keyworth, near Nottingham.

(A) Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme — deadline 17 April
Applicants to the MSc in Risk Disaster and Resilience can apply for scholarship funding through the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme, if they meet the eligibility criteria below. The award will cover tuition fees, a maintenance allowance, economy air travel to and from the UK at the beginning and end of the scholar’s degree programme plus additional discretionary allowances.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants must:
- Be a Commonwealth citizen, refugee, or British protected person
- Be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country
- Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2018
- By August 2018, hold a first degree of either first or upper second class (2:1) classification, or lower second class (2:2) classification plus a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)
- Not have studied or worked for one (academic) year or more in a developed country

UKRI-GCRF/DFID Collective Programme, Climate Resilience Network Development Call
Applications are invited up to a maximum value of £200 000 (100% fEC) and 15 months duration. Climate Resilience Network Development Scoping grants are intended to support the building of new researcher-practitioner-policymaker teams to search for novel solutions for complex climate risks. Successful teams will be invited to apply for a second stage round of larger Climate Resilience Network Plus awards to co-design solutions.

Traineeship opportunities at the DRMKC
The Disaster Risk Management Knowledge Centre (DRMKC) is looking for several motivated people willing to contribute to the development of different disaster risk management-related activities.
- INFORM developer (one position). INFORM is a global, open-source risk assessment for humanitarian crises and disasters. We are looking for a trainee to contribute to the development and validation of quantitative early-warning indicators of worsening situations impacting health conditions and/or slow-onset related events inducing humanitarian crises and disasters.
- INFORM impact analysts (two positions). We are looking for an independent assessment of the use and impact of INFORM. The trainees for this role will be responsible for interviewing all the partners to understand the current impact, as well as to extract best practices and suggestions for improvements which could increase the impact of INFORM.
- Graphical designer (one position). We are looking for a trainee to contribute to the design of the new graphical interface of the DRMKC website and promotional material.
- Optimising communication with the general public (one position). The DRMKC is the internet's "What to do in case of...?" corner. The primary duties in this trainee role will be to identify and organise good practices on risk awareness communication and to optimise the usability and navigation of the DRMKC website for a non-expert public. .
- Risk data hub developer (one position). The DRMKC is currently developing a web-based platform — the 'risk data hub' — intended to improve the access and sharing of curated EU-wide risk data, tools and methodologies for fostering disaster risk management. The trainee will contribute to the development of the DRMKC's risk data hub by classifying and managing hazard-related geospatial data and good practices on disaster risk assessment methodologies.
